BindiMaps is the largest provider of totally accessible wayfinding in Australia. We’re growing fast and looking for an Android developer to join our team. 

Our iOS and Android apps assist everyone, including those with blindness, vision impairment or who have other accessibility needs, navigate complex spaces where GPS doesn’t work. We’re installed in more than 100 locations in Australia and overseas, including shopping centres, universities, hospitals, office buildings, major international events and precincts of all kinds. 

We are searching for a versatile, creative Android developer to work in our mobile team on the continued evolution of our product.

Our mobile apps feature our cutting edge indoor localisation system, Hyperlocal, that finds a user’s position inside a space with accuracy of half a meter without using Bluetooth beacons or other building infrastructure. The system uses machine learning to build 3D models of spaces from simple videos. Using the smartphone’s camera and sensors, the app localises the user inside the 3D space, allowing it to provide precise indoor navigation, particularly benefiting users with accessibility needs.

The Android app is using Jetpack Compose, ARCore, and Mapbox, among other technologies. The advanced localisation and navigation algorithms are implemented in a separate Kotlin Multiplatform (KMM) module that is shared with the iOS app. While the KMM module is developed separately, the app is reasonably complex. this job requires strong disciplined engineering thinking and problem-solving skills at times, it would suit someone who enjoys (and has experience in) working on complex applications in a sophisticated technical environment.

Your typical tasks will be: 

• Taking overall responsibility for and ownership of the BindiMaps Android app, continuously improving it and making sure it does the best possible job of getting users to their destination quickly and seamlessly. 
• Working with our team to improve and expand our localisation and navigation system
• Working to improve the accessibility and user experience and UI of the app
  • Contributing to overall product strategy and assisting the team to make the best decisions in the interests of users and the BindiMaps business.

BindiMaps is a young Australian startup, but we’re strong (and we pay proper salaries). We’re a small, friendly and collaborative team with no hierarchy.  We’re flexible about how you manage your time, and (as long as it’s in Australia) where you work, whether that’s remotely or in our offices in Sydney and Melbourne.
