Meet Principal Systems Architect, Dr Athanassios (Thanassis) Boulis!
Thanassis is responsible for the complex system design of BindiMaps, and the development of our localisation and navigation algorithms.
He has more than 20 years of experience building sensor networks, designing and evaluating communication protocols, developing fault-tolerant algorithms and working with big data. His work has more than 3400 citations from other researchers and innovators.
His research on remote monitoring of the structural health of bridges has been used to monitor the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. The project received an Honourable Mention in the 2012 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards and won the 2012 NSW state iAward in the Tools and Infrastructure and e-Logistics and Supply chain categories.
Thanassis has worked closely with Sydney’s leading universities, designing and teaching Advanced Networks and Sensor Networks subjects to graduate-level students at UNSW and the University of Sydney and supervising Masters and PhD students.
In his free time, Thanassis likes to play pickup games of basketball at his local courts. He loves the fun and camaraderie and the challenge to adapt his game as he is getting older. He also has a performative side as a long-standing member of an improv theatre troupe called Playback Theatre Sydney.
“Working for Bindimaps is the most enjoyable and fulfilling position I’ve had in my career, and I love that I am creating the core technology of a startup from the ground up. Joining BindiMaps was for me an opportunity to create something of real, lasting value in the world and to help people with the basic challenges of daily life,” says Thanassis.
